Sunday, April 25, 2010 Community Thoughts on Infrastructure Priorities
The topic of the new Harbour crossing bridge does not rate highly with the total community of the Whangarei District. 29% of the public see it as a high priority, with the Whangarei ‘Heads’ residents (on a basis of an aggregate 8/9/10 rating) giving it a 33% level, ‘City’ and 18% and ‘Rural’ a 10% level.
In contrast to the new bridge, the public requirement for a “spill free sewage system” has caught the community imagination and created a high excitement factor. 85% rated the importance at 8, 9 or 10. The ‘Heads’ residents felt most strongly on this with 93% rating it 8, 9 or 10.
City traffic movement improvements has two thirds of the electorate looking for action, spread fairly evenly over all districts.
The respondents were also asked if they had important issues to be resolved as well as those in the questionnaire. Approximately 10% of responses contained a ‘favoured’ issue, none receiving more than a couple of mentions. These are listed as follows:
Old Boys fiasco; Kensington Park parking; Opposed to new Events Centre; Library problems; Airport runway extension; Waste water reticulation; Bus service; Cultural centre; Town Basin renewal; Poor road surfaces; Rubbish collection costs; Burm maintenance; Cemetry at Ruakaka; Agricultural run-off; Footpath maintenance; Rural bus service; Cost of sewage renewal; Lack of city parking; Kamo by-pass; Walton Street round-about hazard; Whangarei by-pass overdue; Recycle bins; Safer streets; Cycle-ways overdue; High level of rates; Graffiti clearance; Rose St bus depot; Five star hotel required; Ody Road sealing; Provision of broadband; Not enough infrastructure; Onerahi by-pass; Sewage at Waipu.
