Wednesday, January 27, 2010 Nail in the Coffin
Yet another sewage spill has prompted the usual proliferation of warning signage. One sign, not one hundred metres from my place has really got up my nose. The sign is placed beside a large mangrove forest, cautioning people not to swim there - umm, who swims in mangrove forests? The sign is placed outside the Waikaraka Marine Reserve and cautions people not to collect shellfish - umm, we all know we are not allowed to collect shellfish from a marine reserve, don’t we?
However, what really got me going was that the sign was attached to a pohutakawa tree by way of galvanised nails. Umm, what better way to kill a tree than by driving galvanised nails into it?
Perhaps this is indicative of the larger picture regarding the problem of Whangarei’s sewage.
